Video Games Are Changing What We Call Art
Video Games as the Intersection of Art and Technology
The Ancient Link Between Art and Tools
Art is fundamentally linked with technology. From our earliest cave paintings to our Las Vegas Spheres, the idea that humans will develop some sort of way of leaving an imprint or expressing themselves is core to being human. Each tool we invent better able to express ourselves.
Video Games: A Modern Expression of the Human Condition
Video Games are a new development in human history, but their purpose aims to strike at something core to the human experience. Whether they are able to capture something more than hedonistic fun has been a debate since the early ages of arcades. Now however due to the unprecedented level of technological development we have had experienced in the past 2 decades video games that were once limited by simple processors are now able to capture much more. Games like Baudler's Gate 3 are incredibly complex and emotionally deep games that are able to leave genuine lasting impacts in the people that play them. In addition to this a generation of children who were raised playing video games has spent their career developing tools for young creatives to use lowering the barrier of entry.
Video games are a relatively new development in human history, but their purpose aims to strike at something central to the human experience. Whether they are capable of capturing more than hedonistic fun has been debated since the early arcade era. But now, with the insane pace of technological growth over the past two decades, games that were once constrained by simple processors are now able to communicate far more.
The Rise of Creative Accessibility
One of the most beautiful developments in the space has been the democratization of creation. The first generation of kids who grew up playing video games is now building the tools for others to make them. The barrier to entry has dropped now dramatically.
In the 1980s, creating a game meant learning binary and circuit board design. Today, we have boundless creative tools at our fingertips that allow for much faster more detailed creations.
Artificial Intelligence: The Next Creative Catalyst
With the rise of AI, I expect the final major barrier to entry that being the ability to produce assets and code them which will allow for a much greater degree of artistic expression in video games. While there are ethical issues with AI if it is developed in a way to maximize its use as a tool AI can serve as a vector revolution in art almost like what happened when radio became readily available for the general public. However, like with radio I expect there to be a large amount of regulation to be past in response to the early effects that it will have on the system. Which is why it is pivotal that young creatives see where the wind is turning and try to integrate AI into parts of their creative process. That way you can show the good that responsible use of these tools can provide.
Conclusion: A New Age for Creative Technology
Art and Technology are irrevocably linked together, from humans earliest works to our most modern art provides a vector for us to better try and express truths of human existence. Video Games are a new medium for this artistic progression and due to our technological developments in recent years it has spurred on a greater acceptance for this fact. Artificial Intelligence seems to be the next pioneering frontier for technology so it is our responsibility as creatives to understand it as well as we can so that we can create positive things with it
